Memorial Details
What type of memorial is it?
How would you describe the memorial and its ornamentation?
Two windows with themes from 'Pilgrim's Progress'. The left hand window depicted Greatheart protecting the women from the giant Grim, who with his chained lions, impeded the progress of the Pilgrims along the King's highway. At the foot was the text 'Faithful unto death'.
The right hand window depicted the scene where the young knight having passed over to the other side is receiving his reward. He is shown stepping from the barque which has carried him safely to the shores of Paradise. In his hand he grasps firmly his sword, symbolical of honour, and is about to receive the crown of life from our Lord. An angel at the side holds the martyr's palm and his lance with banneret bearing the cross, symbolical of victory over death, while peace is symbolised by hovering doves. The text is 'I will give thee a crown of life'
