Memorial Details
What type of memorial is it?
How would you describe the memorial and its ornamentation?
The dedicatory inscription is divided between a ribbon surrounded by three cherubim in a trefoil at the head of the window and a panel at the foot. Above the panel, a youthful figure kneels in prayer before a colonnade through which can be seen a landscape illuminated by a crescent moon. A hanging lamp illuminates the scene and a censer and scrolls appear in the foreground. Surmounting the scene is a ribbon carrying the Latin adage: ‘Decus et decorum est pro patria mori’ (Translation: It is sweet and fitting to die for one’s country.) Above the ribbon are (left to right): a hurst (a cluster of trees on a hillock – ‘canting arms’ for Hirst); the arms of Eastbourne College; the badge of the King’s Liverpool Regiment (bearing a Roman numeral VIII) with a battle honour for Egypt beneath; unidentified arms of a black eagle(?) clasping in its talon a snake emerging from a chalice; and another hurst.
