Northampton Mercury - Friday 04 December 1925 (page 6) reported: 'TO THE FALLEN. New Aisle, Mural Tablet, and Stained Window. AT KETTERING ST. ANDREW'S. Churchpeople from all parts of the county were present at St. Andrew's Church, Kettering, on Saturday afternoon, when a new aisle was opened and dedicated by the Bishop of Peterborough; a memorial tablet was unveiled bearing the names of 72 men of the parish who paid the supreme sacrifice during the war, was unveiled by Sir Mervyn Manningham Buller, M.P., and Mr. A. H. Essam, who has been organist at the church for the past 45 years, unveiled a stained glass window, which had been given by him in memory of his son, who fell in the war. The Church was erected in 1868, and the question of a new aisle was first seriously considered about 40 years ago, but it was not until the present vicar, the Rev. F. L. Cattell, who was present at Saturday’s ceremony, after having passed through a critical illness, went to Kettering, that the suggestions took practical form. The new aisle is characteristic of the early decorated style, and has cost £3,773. It was built by a local firm. MEMORIAL AISLE. The aisle has been erected in memory of the fallen, and contains the mural tablet, on which their names are inscribed. At the four corners are the St. Andrew’s Cross, the arms of Kettering, the Cross Keys, and the Tudor Rose. On the tablet are the words, "To the Glory of God and in memory of those who yielded their lives in the Great War, 1914-18, and who worshipped in this Church, the north aisle was added to the Church, and its tablet was erected. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” The stained glass window, the gift of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Essam, in memory of their son, cost £250, and is the third stained glass window in the church. The congregation at the opening ceremony included members and officials of the Kettering Urban Council, with the chairman (Dr. J. Tolpoult, J.P.), and clergy from all parts of the Diocese, accompanied the Bishop. After the new aisle had been dedicated by the Bishop, the hymn, "Come Holy Ghost,” was sung, after which the procession proceeded to the new aisle, to the singing of "We Love this place.” Sir Mervyn Manningham Buller, unveiling the tablet, said that what the fallen had done in the way of sacrifice, loyalty and love, should be a lesson to us to follow their example. After the memorial window had been unveiled and dedicated, the augmented choir sang C. H. Lloyd’s anthem, "Beloved, it is well,” and the Bishop dedicated the Sanctuary chair. The Bishop of Peterborough, in his address, asked the congregation to let the service be the beginning of more ambitious service to God'.
