HC Deb 29 April 1890 vol 343 cc1636-71636
§MR. BRADLAUGH
I wish to put a question to the Under Secretary of State for India of which I have given him private notice, namely, whether the information now received from the Government of India as to the sickness enables him to correct the answer which he gave to a question addressed to him on the 24th of February, that the accounts of the sickness prevailing in the Expedition had been greatly exaggerated.
SIR J. GORST
No, Sir; I am not able to say that more recent information has produced in the mind of the Secretary of State that alteration of opinion which the hon. Member appears to expect.
§MR. BRADLAUGH
Does not the information which the right hon. Gentleman has been good enough to furnish me with, show that in the months of December, January, and February a very large number of British officers and British troops were sick? Take, for example, the 21st of December, when 50 men of the Scottish Borderers were sick and 13 out of 49 officers. Under those circumstances, does not the right hon. Gentleman think that my question fairly represented the state of health of the troops at the time I put the question?
Leamington Spa, Anglo-Boer War - warmemorials (tapatalk.com); In the list of those slightly wounded at the engagement near Paardeberg, appears the name of Private G. H. Ward, of the 2nd Seaforth Highlanders. Ward, previous to rejoining his regiment, was Mr. Bezant's porter at Leamington. Private A. Lott, of the 2nd Seaforth Highlanders, also of Leamington, was slightly wounded at the battle of Paardeberg. Private F. Conway, of Dicken's Yard, Kenilworth Street, Leamington, was severely wounded at the same engagement. Among the officers wounded at Paardeberg, in Lord Roberts's bombardment of General Cronje, appears the name of Captain James Pratt, of the King's Own Scottish Borderers, son of Colonel Pratt, a well-known Leamington resident. His family have received a telegram stating that Captain Pratt was injured in the thigh, but fortunately it is only a flesh wound, and not of a very serious nature. (Leamington Spa Courier, Saturday 3rd March 1900)
IWM War Memorial register 68355; IN LOVING MEMORY OF FRANCIS ALEXANDER KINGLAKE FOSTER,/ SECOND LIEUTENANT KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS, ONLY SON OF EDWARD JOHN FOSTER AND MARY, HIS WIFE,/ AND GRANDSON OF JOHN ALEXANDER KINGLAKE. HE WAS SHOT BY THE ENEMY ON JANUARY 12TH 1890,/ WHILE ON ACTIVE SERVICE, WITH HIS REGIMENT, ON THE CHIN-LUSHAI EXPEDITION, IN UPPER BURMAH,/ IN THE TWENTY THIRD YEAR OF HIS AGE./ "What I do, thou knowest not now; but thou shall know hereafter."
Britain's Small Forgotten Wars (britainssmallwars.co.uk); CHIN LUSHAI EXPEDITION, BURMA, 1890; Lt Francis Alexander Foster, King's Own Scottish Borderers, when his battalion, stationed in Burma, was attached to an expedition into the Chin Hills, the range of mountains which can be traced running down from Assam along what is now the Bangla Desh - Burma border. In the late 19th Century the hills were the haunt of a number of tribes of the Mizo, or Zomi, people, whose raiding had become a major concern to the British controlling the lands around. On January 9th Foster's force was camped at a place known then as Taungtek having accepted the formal surrender of the local Yokwa chiefs at their nearby village of Lamtok. Foster went out walking with two comrades, a Lieutenant Pratt of his own regiment, the Scottish Borderers, and Surgeon-Major Burke of the Medical Service. About a mile and a half out of the camp the three were fired upon. Pratt drew his revolver and chased the assailants, who fled. When Pratt returned he found Burke bent over the body of Foster, who had been shot through the back of the head, dying instantly.
Wiki: The British Indian Army Lushai Expedition of 1871 to 1872 was a punitive incursion under the command of Generals Brownlow and Bourchier. The objectives of the expedition were to rescue British subjects who had been captured by the Lushais in raids into Assam—including a six-year-old girl called Mary Winchester—and to convince the hill tribes of the region that they had nothing to gain and everything to lose by placing themselves in a hostile position towards the British Government. For the British, the expedition was a success: the prisoners were freed and the hill tribes agreed to negotiated peace terms. The border region was to remain peaceful until 1888 when large scaled raiding was resumed and another punitive expedition was organised.
