Notes
The building at Silvertown was a munitions factory, which caught fire, leading to an explosion on 19/1/1917. 69 people died at the scene; further deaths (including PC Greenoff) later occurred, due to injuries sustained. PC Greenoff, who was on beat duty at the time the fire began and realised the danger, was mortally wounded as the result of having remained at his post to warn others to flee. He was posthumously awarded the King's Police Medal.
