Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. He was married and an all-round sportsman, playing football for Hebden Bridge and hockey for Caldene: he worked for his family firm of wholesale clothiers before he enlisted in November 1916. He refused a commission and was killed by shellfire. He is also commemorated on IWM 29384 and 2611 as well as the Tyne Cot Memorial. His brother, James, was killed 6 weeks later and is also commemorated here (and also on 29384).
