Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. He worked as a woollen piecer in a mill in West Vale but also played the cornet in the Elland Brass Band. He was a Territorial and so was mobilised at the start of the war, initially into the West Riding Regiment, but was wounded and had to return to England. Reassigned to the Leicestershire Regiment, he served in Ireland during the 1916 rising and was killed in the 3rd Battle of Ypres. He is also commemorated on IWM 2830 and 2832 as well as the Tyne Cot Memorial. This all suggests he did not die in France as the Memorial lists.
