Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. He was a gifted musician, playing violin in the Todmorden Olympia, the Todmorden Music Society and the pit orchestra of the Blackpool Hippodrome. He served as a drummer in the Battalion drum and fife band and was killed by shellfire as he brought food up to the trenches. He is also commemorated on IWM 2224.
