Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. He was a mill worker who enlisted in August 1914 and was in France by the following April. Two and a half years later he was killed as he moved forward with a machine gun team. His age was given as both 23 and 25 in the press at the time and he was not found by them to be commemorated on any other Calderdale memorial: however, he is on the Tyne Cot Memorial. His brother-in-law, James Cavanagh, also died in WW1 and is commemorated on IWM 2717.
