Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. The son of a doctor, he was in business in Todmorden before the war. He enlisted into the Machine Gun Corps but was in tanks when the Motorised Machine Gun Corps was formed (which later became the Riyal Tank Corps). He was involved in the first ever use of tanks on the Somme in September 1916 but died less than 2 months later in a military hospital due to sepsis from severe shrapnel wounds in his back. He celebrated his 21st birthday in hospital with his mother and sister present and now is also commemorated on IWM 2863.
