Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. Educated in Hebden Bridge and Harrogate, he was a member of the local Liberal and Hockey Clubs who enlisted in October 1914. After serving in France and being commissioned, he won his MC for leading a risky reconnaissance during which he held off attacks and shot two with his revolver. He was wounded and blinded at Contalmaison on the Somme in July 1916 and was invalided back to England, dying in the presence of his Parents and Sister in hospital in Chelsea. He was a practising Baptist, hence his burial in Hebden Bridge, and his Father subsequently founded a studentship in his memory at the Hebden Bridge Secondary School he had attended. He is also commemorated on IWM 29386.
