Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. He was a postman before the war and delivered on the Blackshaw round from Heptonstall. He was a former regular and so was called up in August 1914. He fought at Mons and was cut off behind enemy lines: he escaped to the UK via Holland disguised as a workman. He was then twice wounded and died on the same day at a casualty clearing station. He was not found commemorated on any other Calderdale Memorial.
