Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra detail. A works manager before enlisting in August 1914. It seems likely he was one of 8 friends who all enlisted together into the Cheshire Regiment - including Clifford Foster, also commemorated on this memorial. All were commissioned but 4 were killed and only 1 survived unscathed.
