The College website (see references) provides the following additional information: 'A South African, he came up in 1914 to read Natural Sciences. A scholar, received double honours, and won scholarships for further study, but did not graduate. Military Service: Lieutenant Coldstream Guards, attached to 2nd Guards Machine Gun Company. Died on 27 November 1917 in fighting at Fontaine during the Battle of Cambrai.'
