The College website (see references) provides the following additional information: 'Accepted 1914 as a Classics scholar, but did not come into residence. Military Service: 2nd Lieutenant 7th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. Died 5 July 1916 in a bomb attack on a German trench during fighting around Horseshoe Tench, La Boiselle in the Battle of the Somme.'
