Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. He worked as a weaver but was clearly an accomplished sportsman, playing rugby for Halifax and football for Halifax Town, Todmorden and Portsmouth AFC before he enlisted in June 1916. He may also commemorated on IWM 2663 and 2721 but only one of the two James Pickles from Todmorden who died on the same day are listed there and it is unclear which is which.
