Notes
The Roll includes this entry for 'Jack Stimson', whose address it lists as King's Road, Old Fletton. N.B. The Roll mistakenly listed him twice: once under the correct surname of Simpson (but misspelling his forename as 'Zaccheus'), and also under the name 'Jack Stimson'. This rogue entry under 'Stimson' resulted from his name being misrecorded in local press reports in late October 1918, when they announced his death, and mentioning the addresses in Fletton of both his widow and his mother.

(CWGC records that Private Zac Simpson, regimental number 269795, died aged 35 on 3/10/1918 serving in 1st/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment), and is buried in grave V.P.8 at Bellicourt British Cemetery in France. They record him as the son of the late James Simpson of 5 King's Road, Old Fletton, Peterborough, and the husband of May Winifred Simpson of 61A Salford Road, Streatham Hill, London. Soldiers Died in the Great War records him as a native of Glasmore Fen, Cambridgeshire who was living in New Fletton when he enlisted at Huntingdon. The Medal Rolls record that Zacchaeus Simpson served initially in the 1/7th Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters under the regimental number 20582, before joining the 1/6th Battalion under regimental number 269795. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record him as Zacchaeus Simpson, and that his widow Mary W Simpson was his legatee. On the 1911 census he was recorded as Zacchaeus Simpson, a servant at the Bedford Coffee House Temperance Hotel in Queen's Street, Peterborough. On the 1901 census he was recorded as Zacchaeus, living with his parents James and Martha at Eastree, which was given as his place of birth. On the 1891 census he was likewise recorded as Zacchaeus, living with his parents in Benwick Road, Whittlesey, which was recorded as his place of birth. His birth was registered as Zacchaeus Simpson in the Whittlesey District in 1884. His marriage to May W Neilon in the Peterborough District in 1916 was registered under the name Zaccheus Simpson).

Whilst the inclusion of this entry re 'Jack Stimson' on the Roll is known to have been an error, it nonetheless exists, so this Names record of it is needed, in order to avoid the impression that it has been overlooked. (Our Names record re his entry on the Roll under the correct surname Simpson is 591814).

The mistaken inclusion of "Jack Stimson" on the 1990s version of the Roll of Honour arose from an article printed on 26/10/1918 in the Peterborough Advertiser, announcing the death of Private "Jack Stimpson" of the Sherwood Foresters. The report described him as the third son of Mrs Stimpson of King's Road, Old Fletton, and gave his widow's address as Bread Street, New Fletton. All of the details reported in that newspaper article re "Jack Stimpson" actually related to Zacchaeus Simpson. (Either Zacchaeus was known as "Jack", or the newspaper simply misreported his forename; the error regarding his surname was a typo).

One of the prime sources on which the Peterborough WW1 Roll of Honour was based was the local newspaper archive of reports printed during the War. The inaccurate/misleading report that was printed on 26/10/1918 re Private "Jack Stimpson" resulted in the death of Zacchaeus Simpson being recorded twice on the 1990s version of the Roll of Honour: once under his correct forename and his own home address of Bread Street in New Fletton, and again as "Jack Stimson" under his mother's address of King's Road, Old Fletton.
