(CWGC records that Private Robert Smedley, regimental number 267486, died aged 22 on 27/9/1917 serving in 5th Battalion Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, and is buried in grave II.E.6 at Westhof Farm Cemetery in Belgium. They record him as the husband of Hilda Smedley of 266 Lincoln Road, Millfield, Peterborough. Soldiers Died in the Great War records Robert as a native of Chippenham, Cambs, who was living in Peterborough when he enlisted at Fletton; it also records that he served in Bedfordshire Regiment under regimental number 482 before joining the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry. The Medal Rolls record that Robert had served in the 1/1st Bucks Battalion under regimental number 20701 prior to joining the 5th Battalion Oxford & Bucks Light Infantry under regimental number 267486; he was entitled to the Territorial Force medal. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that Robert's widow Hilda was his legatee. The marriage of Robert W Smedley to Hilda Setchfield was registered in Peterborough District in 1916. On the 1911 census Robert had been aged 15, living at 120 Fletton Avenue in Peterborough with his parents John and Elizabeth Smedley; his place of birth was given as Chippenham, Soham, Cambs. On the 1901 census he had been living with his parents at Park Street, Chippenham. His birth was registered in the Newmarket District of Cambridgeshire in 1895).
