Notes
The Roll lists his address as 13 Mayors Walk. It mistakenly recorded his forename as "Leonard", and that he died on 12/3/1915.
(CWGC records that Private Leonard Jordan, regimental number 16640, died on 14/3/1915 serving in 2nd Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, and is commemorated on Le Touret Memorial in France. Soldiers Died in the Great War likewise recorded him as Leonard Jordan, stating him to be a native of Peterborough St Mark's parish who died on 14/3/1915. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects recorded him as "Leonard Jordon", killed in action 14/3/1915, and that his mother Rebecca Marriott was his legatee. The Medal Rolls recorded him as Leonard Jordan, and that he disembarked in France 28/12/1914). Whilst he evidently served as "Leonard Jordan", his birth was actually registered in Peterborough in 1877 as "Lemuel Jordan". He was the son of Charles Jordan and Rebecca Marriott nee Ward. He appeared on the 1891 and 1901 census as "Lemuel Jordan", living with his parents in Peterborough; by the 1911 census his parents had moved to 13 Mayor's Walk, Peterborough. On 17/6/1910 Lemuel Jordan had sailed to Canada aboard the Empress of Britain. He arrived back in England aboard the Ascania on 4/12/1913. When Lemuel enlisted in the Army he did so under the name "Leonard Jordan", so all his military records are under that name. As his death was reported as "Leonard Jordan" on 10/4/1915 in the Peterborough Advertiser, and that was the prime source used to compile the Peterborough Roll of Honour and Book of Remembrance, both those memorials record him as "Leonard". However, the headstone in Broadway Cemetery of his parents, Charles and Rebecca Jordan, records him under his true name; the inscription reads: "Also of Lemuel Jordan killed in action at Neuve Chapelle March 1915, the beloved son of the above" (see War Memorials Archive memorial reference 70099; name ID 1047950).
