Notes
The Roll of Honour records him as "Charles Hy Barnes" of Stanground.
(CWGC records that Private C H Barnes, regimental number G/15274, was serving in the 11th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment when he died aged 29 on 7/12/1917; he is buried in grave IX.D.7 at Nine Elms British Cemetery in France. They record him as the son of George & Harriet Barnes of Hardwick, King's Lynn, Norfolk. Soldiers Died in the Great War recorded that Charles Henry Barnes enlisted in East Dereham. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that his mother Harriet was his legatee. On 5/1/1918 the Peterborough Advertiser announced the death of "Charles' Hy Barnes" of Stanground, stating he had died of wounds on 7/12/1917, having served in France for nearly two years. He was reported as leaving a widow and two children. He appears likely to have been the Charles Henry Barnes, son of George, who married Alice Day in Fletton in 1915).
