Notes
The Roll lists his address as 389 Gladstone Street. It inaccurately states that he died serving as a Private in the 3rd Battalion Northants Regiment, regimental number 8837; he actually died as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers, regimental number 276492.
(CWGC records that Sapper Bertie Woodward, regimental number 276492, died aged 24 on 31/12/1917 serving in 96th Light Railway Operating Company of the Royal Engineers; their registers state that he drowned at sea, on H.T. Osmanieh. He is commemorated on the Chatby Memorial in Egypt. CWGC record him as the son of Mr & Mrs Arthur Woodward of 389 Gladstone Street, Peterborough.
The Medal Rolls record that Bertie initially served in the Northamptonshire Regiment under regimental number 3/8837. He then served in the 1st Battalion under regimental number G/29120, and then in the Middlesex Regiment under regimental number 7647, before joining the Royal Engineers under regimental number 276492.
The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that he died on 31/12/1917 on HT Osmanieh, and that his father was his legatee.
Bertie Woodward's birth was registered in Peterborough District in 1893. He was baptised at Peterborough St Mark's Church on 21/9/1893 as the son of Arthur and Sarah Ann Woodward of 74 Westwood Street, Peterborough. On the 1911 census he was living with his parents at 389 Gladstone Street).
