(CWGC records that Private Percy Charles Wigfall, regimental number 3398, died on 22/8/1918 serving in the 33rd Battalion of the Australian Infantry A.I.F. under the alias "Williams", and that he is buried in grave II.J.7 at Bray Military Cemetery.
The birth of Percy Charles Wigfall was registered in Peterborough District in 1885. On 11/2/1885 he was baptised at Peterborough St Mark's Church as the son of Charles and Charlotte Susan Wigfall of Cromwell Road. On the 1891 census he was living with his parents at 70 Cromwell Road. By the 1901 census he was living with his parents in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. (On the 1911 census his parents were still living in Hitchin; Percy was no longer living with them, being possibly already in Australia by then).
In July 1912, Percy was recorded on the manifest of the Osterley, which left Victoria, Australia bound for Sydney and Brisbane. On 16/4/1913 he was listed in the Australian Police Gazette as a missing person at Bondi, New South Wales . In 1917 he was on the Electoral Roll of Balaclava, Victoria in Australia.
Percy Charles Wigfall's attestation form, dated 28/5/1917, is at the National Archives of Australia. It records that when he enlisted he did so under the alias "Charles Williams", giving his address as 216 Bourke Street, Sydney, his place of birth as Northampton, and his next of kin as his father "Charles Williams". He joined the Australian Imperial Force on 4/6/1917.
On 16/7/1917 Percy embarked at Sydney on HMAT 16 Port Melbourne, bound for Liverpool, England. On 5/2/1918 he embarked at Southampton for France. On 17/4/1918 he was wounded and gassed, and was transported on 22/4/1918 to England, where he was admitted on 24/4/1918 for treatment at Birmingham Hospital. It was at that stage that he admitted to the Australian Army that he had given them false details when he enlisted; on 15/5/1918 he signed a Statutory Declaration that his true name was Percy Charles Wigfall, and gave his father's name and address as Mr Charles Wigfall of 15 Lime Tree Avenue, Peterborough.
Having recovered from his injuries, on 10/7/1918 Percy returned to France, where he rejoined his unit on 23/7/1918. He was killed in action on 22/8/1918 and buried in Bray Military Cemetery. His Army file contains a copy of his Will, in which he named his mother Charlotte S Wigfall as his beneficiary).
