John William Wheatley's birth was registered in Peterborough District in 1896. On the 1911 census he was recorded as "Willie" Wheatley, living with his parents Jesse and Emily at 247 Gladstone Street, Peterborough; his place of birth was given as Garton End, near Peterborough. On the 1901 census he had been recorded as "Willie", living with his parents at Garton End, Peterborough.
After the action at Aubers Ridge, John was reported as missing. An appeal in the local press by his parents for information resulted in a response from his comrade Private A. Short, who had been alongside John at Aubers Ridge, and had himself been wounded. His letters were quoted at length in the Peterborough Advertiser on 7/8/1915. They were to the effect that, after "Bill" (i.e. John William) was shot through the head, he had uttered the phrase "I love her, I love her" and then collapsed and died).
