(CWGC records that Lieutenant Samuel Vergette died aged 19 on 4/10/1917 serving in the 1st Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment, and is commemorated on Panel 35 of Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium. They record him as the son of Charles Tomson Vergette and Mary Vergette of Priestgate, Peterborough, and that he was Mentioned in Despatches.
Samuel's birth was registered in Peterborough District in 1898. His baptism on 1/11/1898 as the son of Mary Maria and Charles Tomson Vergette of Peterborough was recorded in the Baptism registers of Glinton Church. On the 1901 census he was living with his parents at Holly Lodge, Broadway, Peterborough. On the 1911 census they lived at 55 Broadway, Peterborough; Samuel was the only son.
Samuel's Army service file records that he applied for a commission in the Lincolnshire Regiment on 28/10/1915, one month after his 17th birthday. His commission as 2nd Lieutenant from 1/11/1915 was published in the London Gazette on 16/11/1915. He trained with the 3/4th Battalion until he was 18. On 22/10/1916 he was posted to France and joined the 1st Battalion. During the following year he was Adjutant to Lt Colonel Lewis Evans V.C., and was Sniping Officer and Intelligence Officer.
During the Battle of Broodseinde, the telephone wires became severed, so Samuel and a fellow officer volunteered to walk a mile under heavy shellfire to pick up a buried wire and send an urgent message to HQ; neither man was seen again. Samuel was posted as missing on 4/10/1917, which was presumed to be his date of death. His promotion to Lieutenant was posthumously published in the London Gazette on 2/11/1917.
He is commemorated on a plaque and stained glass window at St Benedict's Church in Glinton, and on the War memorials of The King's School in Peterborough).
