(CWGC's Casualty Register records that Driver J W Stratton, regimental number T4/044863, died on 9/11/1918 serving in the 8th Division Training Company of the Army Service Corps, and is buried in grave XLIX.E.21 at Etaples Military Cemetery in France. They record him as the husband of E. Stratton of 6 Cambalt Road, Putney Hill, London. [CWGC's online database currently displays his regimental number incorrectly as T4/034863; they have now been alerted to the anomaly]. Soldiers Died in the Great War recorded John William Stratton as a native of Werrington who was living in Stamford when he enlisted in Peterborough. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that he died at 26th General Hospital in France, that his widow Elizabeth was his legatee, and that she received an allowance for their daughter Doris, whose date of birth was recorded on the register as 6/10/1910. On the 1911 census John Stratton had been living at 17A St Martin's in Stamford with his wife Elizabeth and their 4 month old daughter Doris, plus John's two step-children and a nurse-child; John gave his age as 25, his place of birth as Werrington, and stated that he and Elizabeth had been married 1 year. [His marriage to Elizabeth Dorman was registered in Stamford District in 1910]. On the 1901 census John Stratton had been recorded as aged 12, living with his parents John and Jane Stratton at Brook Cottage in Werrington. His parents were still living in Werrington on the 1911 census. John William Stratton's birth was registered in Peterborough District in 1888).
