His birth was registered in Peterborough District in 1883 as Ben Stocks, which was therefore his legal name. His baptism as Ben Stocks was recorded in the register of St Mary's Church in Peterborough on 16/12/1883, which stated him to be the son of James and Adah Lucy Stocks of St John's Street. On the 1891 census Ben and his siblings (including Lucy) were living with their widowed mother Ada in St Mary's Street, Peterborough. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion Northants Regiment and posted to South Africa on 8/4/1903; he returned to the UK on 27/5/1904. On 17/12/1904 he transferred to the 1st Battalion and was posted to India; he returned to the UK 31/3/1906. He joined the Army Reserve on 2/4/1908. His Army file records that his next of kin were his mother Ada Seaton and his siblings. His medals were sent to his sister: Mrs A.L. Webb of 55 Bushberry Road, Homerton, London. As he had enlisted as "Benjamin" Stocks, all his Army records are under that name).
