(Joseph Stead's birth was registered in Peterborough District in 1894. On the 1911 census he was living with his parents at 91 Whites Row, St John's Street in Peterborough. His Army service file records that he was aged 19 when he enlisted on 5/9/1914. His parents were recorded on the file as Frederick and Maria Stead of 118 Rogers Street, Peterborough. The file records that Joseph was first sent to France on 26/7/1915, and was killed in action 8/8/1917. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects likewise record that he died on 8/8/1917, and that his mother Maria was his legatee).
