Notes
The Roll lists his address as Gracious Street, and states he died on an unspecified date in July 1916. [The original 1921 Roll did not include him - presumably because Gracious Street is in Whittlesey, rather than Peterborough]
(CWGC records that Private Samuel Scotney, regimental number 16570, died aged 36 on 1/7/1916 serving in 11th Battalion Suffolk Regiment, and is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial in France. They record him as the son of Samuel and Mary Scotney. Soldiers Died in the Great War records him as a native of Whittlesey. The Army registers of Soldiers' Effects record that his brother John was his legatee. Samuel Scotney's birth was registered in Whittlesey District in 1882. On the 1891 census he was aged 8, living with his parents Samuel and Mary at Crab End, Whittlesey. On the 1901 census he was living with them at Gracious Street, Whittlesey. His mother's death aged 59 was registered in Whittlesey in 1904. On the 1911 census his father Samuel was living in Gracious Street, Whittlesey; Samuel junior himself was in HM Prison Leicester on that Census. According to the Probate Index Samuel Scotney senior of Whittlesey died on 8/6/1915 at Peterborough Infirmary).
