Notes
The Roll lists his address as 29 Duke Street. It records him as being a Trooper in the Northants Yeomanry when he died of sickness on 22/10/1914.
(CWGC currently has no record of George Rowles in their casualty registers. The birth of George John Elvin Rowles was registered in the Peterborough District in 1894. On the 1901 census he was living with his parents George and Sarah Ann Rowles at Duke Street, Fletton, Peterborough; his place of birth was given as Woodston. On the 1911 census the family still lived at 29 Duke Street, Old Fletton; George was working as a carpenter's apprentice.
The death certificate for Gorge John Elvin Rowles records that he died aged 20 on 22/10/1914 at 29 Duke Street in Old Fletton; the cause of death was acute rheumatism, endocarditis and Bright's Disease; his occupation was listed as "Trooper Northants Yeomanry (Carpenter Journeyman)"; the death was registered by his father, of the same address. On 31/10/1914 the Peterborough and Hunts Standard reported George's death and funeral, stating that he was "a member of the Northants Yeomanry, but owing to illness, was unable to serve with them". His funeral had been held at St Margaret's Church in Fletton. The Peterborough Express' report on 28/10/1914 re his death mentioned that, after the service in Fletton, he had been buried in Woodston Cemetery. Although no evidence has been found that the illness from which George died was attributable to military service, his death certificate nonetheless records that he was serving as a Trooper in the Northamptonshire Yeomanry at that time, i.e. he died in service. His documents have therefore been submitted to CWGC, to consider whether he is eligible to be added to their WW1 casualty registers).
