Notes
The Roll lists his address as St Mary's Street. It also records the death of his brother Alfred.
(Ernest Leonard Remnant's birth in Barnwell was registered in Oundle District in 1893. On the 1901 census he was living with his parents Alfred and Sarah Ann at Mill End in Warmington. His father died in 1908. On the 1911 census Ernest was living with his widowed mother at 71 Princes Street in Peterborough; his mother married Charles Clements in 1912.
Ernest's Army Pension file records that he was living in North Luffenham when he enlisted on 21/9/1914 as a Private in the 2/5th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, regimental number 2602; he was embodied on 21/9/1914 and served in the UK. On 29/10/1915 a Medical Board declared Ernest unfit for active service, due to tuberculosis. He was invalided out of the Army on 27/11/1915 and awarded the Silver War Badge serial number 147950. After he successfully appealed against a decision to refuse him an Army pension, his tuberculosis was officially accepted as having been aggravated by his military service, and a pension was duly awarded. His death certificate records that he died from tuberculosis on 2/8/1917 at his mother's home. He is buried in Block 1 of Broadway Cemetery in Peterborough; his headstone bears an inscription re his brother Alfred, who died on 12/12/1917 serving in the Royal Field Artillery.
At the time of Ernest's death, the Army did not notify the War Graves Commission, so he was absent from their Casualty Register for nearly 100 years. Following a successful submission to CWGC in October 2015, he was accepted as having been a war casualty; CWGC consequently now records that he is buried in 1.V.21 at Broadway Cemetery in Peterborough, and that he was the 'Son of Sarah Ann Clements (formerly Remnant), of Peterborough, and the late Alfred Remnant').
