Notes
The Roll lists his address as 27 Taverner's Road.
(CWGC records that Able Seaman William Robert Rate, service number 196037, died aged 36 on 11/4/1919 having served in the Royal Navy on HMS Pembroke, and is currently commemorated in the UK Book of Remembrance in Berkshire. The Commission was apparently not informed by the Royal Navy at the time of William's death, and he was therefore omitted from their records. However, following a submission by the "In From the Cold Project", in 2012 William was accepted onto the Commission's casualty registers and was added to the UK Book of Remembrance.
The National Archives Registers of Seamen's Services (TNA reference ADM188; Piece 339) record that William was born on 6/7/1882 in Peterborough, and that he enlisted on 8/10/1897, serving first on HMS Impregnable. Having subsequently served on numerous vessels, his final two postings were recorded as HMS Spey from 8/2/1915 to 22/2/1916, then HMS Pembroke from 23/2/1916 to 29/3/1916, on which date he was invalided out of the Navy due to general "paralysis of the insane". William Robert Rate's birth was registered in the Peterborough District in 1882. His baptism on 1/4/1888 was recorded in the registers of Peterborough St Mark's Church, which were noted that his parents Jane Elizabeth and James Rate were living in Westwood Road, Peterborough. On the 1891 census William was living with his parents at 37 Taverner's Lane in Peterborough. On the 1901 census he was serving as an Ordinary Seaman on HMS Sans Pareil. William's death on 11/4/1919 was registered in the Sleaford District in Lincolnshire. (Kesteven County Asylum was in the parish of Quarrington in Lincolnshire, which was within the Sleaford registration District). William was buried in Broadway Cemetery in Peterborough, in Block 1, Grave 477, in the 3rd Division. His grave currently has no headstone. As CWGC is currently unaware of William's burial place, and that his War grave is is unmarked, they have now been informed of his grave plot details in Broadway Cemetery).
