Notes
The Roll lists his address as 23 George Street. It states that he died on 29/3/1918, which differs from some official records.

(CWGC records that Private Charles Nichols, regimental number 28205, died aged 34 serving in the 10th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment, and is buried in grave XV.B.6 at Bienvillers Military Cemetery in France. They record him as the son of Daniel and Hannah Nichols of 23 George Street, New Fletton, Peterborough, and currently list his date of death as 28/3/1918. Charles' death certificate, however, records that he died on 29/3/1918. Soldiers Died in the Great War correctly recorded that he died on 29/3/1918 in the East Yorkshire Regiment, having formerly served in the Norfolk Regiment under regimental number 20217. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects also correctly recorded that he died on 29/3/1918, and that his mother Hannah was his legatee. The birth of Charles Nichols was registered in the Peterborough District in 1884. On the 1891 census he was recorded as "Charlie", living with his parents Daniel and Hannah at 143 Palmerston Road in Woodston, Peterborough; on the 1901 census he was living with his parents at 23 George Street in Fletton, working as a railway clerk. On the 1911 census he was lodging in Gold Street, Norwood Side End, March, Cambridgeshire, working as a railway stoker. His Army service file records that he was living at the Station Hotel in Cambridge, aged 31 years and 7 months, when he enlisted on 22/5/1916 in the Norfolk Regiment under regimental number 20217. He went to France on 23/9/1916. When he transferred to the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment on 12/10/1916 his regimental number changed to 28205. He was hospitalised for gunshot wounds in 1916 and again in 1917. Having returned to France on 27/6/1917. the following month he was transferred to the 8th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment; he was posted to the 10th Battalion on 13/8/1917. His Army file records that he was killed in action on 29/3/1918 - i.e. the date that is recorded on Charles' death certificate. As CWGC currently misrecords his date of death as 28th March 1918, they have been alerted to the anomaly, and requested to consider amending that date on their records and on his gravestone. JK).
