Notes
The Roll lists his address as 63 Westwood Street. It inaccurately recorded him as "Harold Major"; his name was actually "Harry Kisby Major", as which his birth was registered.
(CWGC records that Acting Bombardier Harry Kisby Major, regimental number 855, died aged 31 on 5/8/1918, having served in 3rd/1st H.C. Heavy Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery, and is buried in grave 6.80A in Broadway Cemetery Peterborough. They record him as the son of William Major of Peterborough.
Harry Kisby Major was born in Peterborough in 1886, the son of William Alfred and Sarah Ann Major. On the 1891 and 1901 census he was living with his parents at 63 Westwood Street in Peterborough. By the 1911 census he was lodging at 125 Boat House Cottage, Hyde Road, Bredbury in Cheshire. Harry's Army pension file records that he enlisted on 8/11/1915 as a Gunner in the 3/1st Battalion Kent Heavy Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery; he was appointed Acting Bombardier on 13/5/1916. He was honourably discharged from the Army on 16/8/1916, due to tuberculosis, having served only in the UK, and was awarded the Silver War Badge serial number 11553. His death certificate records that he died from tuberculosis on 5/8/1918 at his parents' home, 63 Westwood Street. He was buried in Block 6 of Broadway Cemetery in Peterborough, where his grave is marked with a family headstone. At the time Harry died the Army did not notify the War Graves Commission, who therefore had no record of him. However, following a successful submission in 2015, he was added to the Commission's WW1 casualty registers). JK
