Notes
This 1994 version of the Roll of Honour lists Ernest Long's address as 61 Churchfield Road, Walton, and states that he was killed in action at Ypres on 19/7/1915 serving in the Yorks and Lancs Regiment, all of which is incorrect. [Those details actually relate to a different local casualty, George William Long, who died serving in the 5th Yorks and Lancaster Regiment; his name was curiously omitted from the Roll, and his details were misassigned to Enest, whose actual address was 22 Crawthorne Road].
(CWGC records that Private Ernest Raymond Long, regimental number 464707, died aged 19 on 22/11/1918 serving in the Labour Corps, and is buried in grave 2.3.693 at Broadway Cemetery in Peterborough. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that Ernest died on 22/11/1918 at the Military Hospital in Bury St Edmunds, serving under regimental number 464707 in 665 Agricultural Company of the Labour Corps; his father Edward was his legatee. His headstone in Broadway Cemetery is inscribed: "IN LOVING MEMORY OF ERNEST RAYMOND, 6TH SUFFOLK RGT, BELOVED SON OF EDWARD AND ALICE LONG, WHO DIED IN THE MILITARY HOSPITAL BURY ST EDMUNDS, NOV: 22:1918, AGED 19 YEARS"; the stone also commemorates his brother Arthur Reginald Long, who was killed in France in WW1 - see our WMR reference 70091. According to the inscription on Ernest's gravestone, he had served in the 6th Battalion Suffolk Regiment; according to CWGC and Soldiers' Effects records he was serving in the Labour Corps at the time he died).
