(CWGC records that Private G R Jones, regimental number 678116, died on 30/8/1918 serving in the 3rd Battalion Canadian Infantry, and is buried in grave VII.E.11 at Fauberg d'Amiens Cemetery at Arras in France. His attestation form at the Library and Archives Canada records that George R Jones, regimental number 678116, was born on 18/12/1890 in Cambridgeshire. His next of kin was his wife Maude Jones of Toronto, Canada; he had enlisted 7/2/1916. When his death was announced in the Toronto Star newspaper, on 11/9/1918, his age was given as 28 and his address as 53 Shudell Avenue; he left a widow and two sons. He was reported to have been posted overseas as a Bandsman with the 160th Battalion in October 1916. Prior to enlisting he had been a coal driver. He was stated to have come out to Canada from England nine years earlier (i.e. c1909). The report of his death that appeared in the Peterborough Advertiser on 28/9/1918 stated he was the son of the late Mr G Jones of Fletton and the brother of Mrs Sutton of Princes Street, Peterborough. Before emigrating to Canada, he had worked for the London Brick Company. From the information on his attestation form, it is likely he was the George Robert Jones whose birth was registered in Newmarket in the January quarter of 1891, and appeared on the 1891 and 1901 census living in Soham, Cambridgeshire with his parents George and Maud Jones).
