Notes
The Roll lists his address as 14 Victoria Place, Old Fletton. It states he died on 22/10/1916 serving in the 3rd Battalion, which differs from official records.

(CWGC records that Private Alfred Walter Holmes, regimental number 29760, died aged 22 on 23/10/1916 while serving in the 7th Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment, and is now buried in grave I.D.11 in Pozieres British Cemetery at Ovillers la Boisselle in France, having been reinterred after the War. They record him as the son of the late John and Elizabeth Holmes of Farcet, Peterborough. Soldiers Died in the Great War records him as a native of Farcet who enlisted in Bedford, and that he died serving in the 7th Battalion; unlike CWGC, it records that he died on 22/10/1916. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects likewise recorded his date of death as 22/10/1916; they state that his widow Florence M Holmes was his legatee).
