Notes
The Roll contains this entry for a William Gray, whose address it lists as 62 Mayor's Walk. It wrongly records his regimental number as 254527, that he was killed in action serving in the Royal Fusiliers on 22/3/1918; it states he died at Hancourt, and is buried in the New Military Cemetery there.
The reason for the incorrect service details/date of death etc is that the Roll has confused the data re two Peterborough soldiers named William Gray who died in WW1. The one from 62 Mayor's Walk was killed in action on 26/3/1918 as Private 25457 in the 7th Northamptonshire Regiment, and is buried in Hancourt; the other William Gray, of 54 Clarence Road, died on 24/2/1917 as Private 50202 in the 7th Royal Fusiliers. Instead of having a separate entry for each of those two casualties, the Roll of Honour mistakenly lists only one of them, and has jumbled the address/service details of the two men.
CWGC records that Private William Gray, regimental number 25457, died on 26/3/1918 while serving in the 7th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, and is commemorated on Special Memorial 3 at Hancourt British Cemetery in France. Soldiers Died in the Great War records him as a native of Buckden in Huntingdonshire who enlisted at St Neots in the 7th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, and that he died on 26/3/1918. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that William's death between 22nd and 26th March 1918 was presumed, and that his widow, Dorothy A Gray, was his legatee.
The other William Gray, of 54 Clarence Road, died on 24/2/1917 as Private 50202 in the 7th Royal Fusiliers, and is buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension in France; CWGC lists him as 'Son of Fred and Elizabeth Gray, of 54, Clarence Rd., New England, Peterborough, Northants'.
