Notes
The Roll lists his address as 29 Towler Street. It misrecords his surname as Gill (it was actually Gell) and his rank as Corporal; he was actually a Rifleman when he died.
(CWGC records that Rifleman William Gell, regimental number 3747, died on 7/10/1916 while serving in the 1st/8th Battalion London Regiment (Post Office Rifles), and is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial in France. They record no next of kin. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that Rifleman William Owen Gell was living in Peterborough when he enlisted in London. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that his mother Fanny and sister Edith were his legatees. The Medal Rolls record that he initially served overseas from 11/11/1915 under regimental number 3747 as a Corporal; his 1915 Star Medal was issued under those details. They indicate that he reverted to Rifleman at his own request, and that his regimental number changed to 371519, under which his British and Victory medals were issued. William Owen Gell's birth was registered in Leicester in 1896. On the 1901 census he was living with his parents, Joseph and Fanny Gell, in Leicester. On the 1911 census he was living with his widowed mother Fanny at 157 Duncan Road, Leicester).
