Notes
The Roll lists his address as 82 New Road, Woodston. It misrecorded him as "Edward Flintoff"; his true surname was Flintoft. .

(His birth in 1886 was registered in the Peterborough District as "Edward Delcom Flintoft". In 1891 the census enumerator misrecorded him as "Edward Delford Flintoft", aged 5, lodging at Hills Yard in Peterborough with Mr & Mrs Sibthorpe. Edward's first marriage was to Ethel May Harris on 22/4/1905 at St John's Church in Peterborough, whose Marriage registers record that "Edward Delfert Flintoff" gave his age as 19 and his address as 28 Albert Place, but did not name his father. His wife's death, aged 23, was registered in Peterborough District in 1909 as "Ethel May Flintoft". On the 1911 census the widowed Edward Flintoft and his two children, Harold age 4 and George age 3, were living at 30 Albert Place in Peterborough. The marriage of "Edward D Flintoft" to his 2nd wife Ellen S Kinsey was registered in the Peterborough District in 1912. The Silver War Badge Medal Roll records that Acting Bombardier Edward Flintoft enlisted on 20/5/1908 under regimental number 4024. His Medal Index Card records that he served in the Royal Field Artillery, and was sent to France on 19/11/1915. He was serving in 4 LEA Brigade of the RFA when he was honourably discharged due to sickness on 23/11/1916; he received the Silver War Badge serial number 502219. No trace has been found of either his Army service record or his pension file.
The death certificate of "Edward Delfert Flintoft" records that he was an Army pensioner, aged 31, when he died on 17/9/1917 at 28 Water End in Woodston. The sole cause of death was given as pulmonary tuberculosis, from which he was stated to have been suffering for 1 year; his widow E.S. Flintoft of the same address registered the death.
On 29/9/1917 the Peterborough Advertiser announced the death of "Gunner Edward Flintoft" of Water End, Woodston, who it reported as having been discharged from the Army in November 1916 having completed 12 years' service with the Volunteers and Territorials. He was stated to have been called up at the outbreak of the War, and to have served in France and afterwards in Egypt. He had been invalided home and discharged from Manchester Hospital in November 1916, since when "he had been continuously ill at home". The report stated that he had been buried in Woodston Cemetery "with full military honours". Edward is commemorated in the Peterborough Book of Remembrance which, like the Roll of Honour, incorrectly recorded his surname as "Flintoff".
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission currently has no record of the death of Edward Flintoft, nor was he listed in Soldiers Died in the Great War. His death certificate records that the tuberculosis from which he died on 17/9/1917 had been diagnosed a year earlier, and the Medal Rolls prove he was discharged from the Army on 23/11/1916, i.e. two months after the TB had been diagnosed. The illness must therefore have been contracted while he was serving in the RFA.
