Notes
Due to confusing/inaccurate reporting of his death in the local newspapers, this man was mistakenly listed twice in the Roll of Honour. This entry correctly recorded him as Private Robert William Dowland of School Lane, Werrington, accurately stating he died in the Dardanelles serving with the 4th Battalion Northants Regiment, but wrongly recording his date of death as 8/9/1915. The other entry for him was as "Robert Blowers" of Thistlemoor Road, Peterborough (which was actually the surname and address of his mother and step-father), incorrectly stating he died in Loos on 25/9/1915, serving in the 6th Northants.

(Robert William Dowland was born in 1888, the son of Annie Maria and James Gabriel Dowland. His father died in 1896; a few years later his mother Annie married James Blowers and set up home in Thistlemoor Road. After Robert William Dowland married Edith Denton on 12/11/1910, they set up home in Werrington. When he died in 1915, the local newspapers confusingly reported his death twice: once as Robert Dowland of Werrington, and again (incorrectly) as Robert Blowers of Thistlemoor Road. This led to the Roll of Honour also mistakenly listing him twice. For further details, see the notes box of the Roll of Honour entry for Robert Blowers: WMR Names reference 564255. CWGC records that Private Robert William Dowland, regimental number 3798, died on 10/9/1915 while serving in 1st/4th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, and is buried in grave IV.D.10 at 7th Field Ambulance Cemetery in Turkey. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that his widow Edith was his legatee).
