Notes
The Roll lists his address as 54 Eastgate. It inaccurately recorded his name as "William Guelph Darling". (His legal name was actually William Joseph Darling, but he enlisted as "William James Darling"). It also wrongly recorded that he served/died in the Sherwood Foresters.

(CWGC records that Private William James Darling, regimental number 60309, died aged 20 on 25/8/1918 serving in the 4th Battalion Middlesex Regiment, and is buried in grave XI.AA.2 at Grevillers British Cemetery in France. They record him as the son of William Henry Darling of 122 Eastgate, Peterborough. Soldiers Died in the Great War likewise records him as "William James Darling", a Peterborough native, and that he was killed in action serving in the Middlesex Regiment. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that William James Darling died in the Middlesex Regiment, and that his sister Susannah was his legatee. All the Medal Rolls record him as having served in the Middlesex Regiment. According to De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour, Private "William Joseph Darling", regimental number G/60309 (son of William Henry Darling & Johana nee Holdich, of 54 Eastgate) was born on 4/4/1898 in Peterborough; he enlisted in the 4th Battalion Middlesex Regiment on 25/11/1916, and was posted overseas on 29/12/1917; he was killed in action near Bapaume on 25/8/1918, and was buried in Greville British Cemetery. The birth of "William Joseph Darling" was registered in Peterborough in 1898; the Baptism register of Peterborough St Mary's Church records that "William Joseph", son of Henry and Joana Darling of Eastgate, was baptised on 10/8/1898. His legal name was therefore William Joseph Darling. However, he enlisted in the Middlesex Regiment as "William James Darling", and is recorded as such on all Army/CWGC documents. It is unknown why the Peterborough Roll of Honour mistakenly recorded his second forename as "Guelph" or that he served in the Sherwood Foresters).
