Notes
The Roll lists him as R C Boyd, and his address as Lime Tree Avenue. It inaccurately lists him as a 2nd Lieutenant.
(CWGC records that Captain Robert Colin Boyd was serving in the 8th Battalion Devonshire Regiment when he died aged 23 on 14/7/1916, and is now buried in grave XI.H.9 of Flatiron Copse Cemetery at Mametz in France, having been reinterred after the Armistice; Tey record him as the son of Archibald H and Gertrude H.F. Boyd of Bellvue, Westwood Ho, Devon. When his death was announced on the 24/7/1916 on page 2 of the Western Times, Robert was described as a 2nd Lieutenant; he was stated to have been educated at Harris Hill, Harrow and Trinity Oxford, and to have been working for the Great Northern Railway Company when War broke out; he was reported to have enlisted in the Public Schools' Corps, and to have received his commission in the 11th Battalion Devonshires on 14/11/1914. Attached to the 2nd Hampshire Regiment on 15/7/1915, he had been aboard HMT Royal Edward when she was hit by a torpedo and sunk on 13/8/1915; although severely injured, he had made a good recovery, and had rejoined the Devonshires in March 1916).
