(CWGC records that 2nd Lieutenant J W Benton died on 31/5/1918 serving in the Royal Air Force; he is now buried in grave VII.A.C.20 at Terlincthun British Cemetery at Wimille in France, having been exhumed after the War from his original grave at Epernay Cemetery. When his death was announced on 20/7/1918 in the Peterborough Advertiser, it was reported that the pilot of the plane in which John had been acting as Observer had written to his mother, Mrs A.C. Benton of Cowgate, informing her that John had been wounded by either a rifle of machine gun bullet while they were flying over the German line on 30/5/1918. The pilot landed the plane near an advanced dressing station, from where John was taken by ambulance to hospital, via a clearing station. It was reported that John had originally joined the Honourable Artillery Company in February 1917. He received his commission at the end of that year. In civilian life, John had worked in the Chief Traffic Managers Department of the Great Northern Railway Company, and had been a member of the Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade. The Probate Index records that John's estate was administered by his mother, Annie Cave Benton of 8a Cowgate).
