Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. Edwin and his brother Harry, also commemorated on this gravestone, were orphans raised by their Aunt and Uncle in Hebden Bridge. Edwin played cricket and rugby and worked for a local wholesale clothier before enlisting with his friend Harry Sutcliffe, with whom he served. He and Sutcliffe were both killed together, Sutcliffe being hit by a sniper in No Man's Land and Edwin killed trying to then reach him. Edwin is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Besides his brother, their cousin, also called Harry, was killed in WW1.
