His father's gravestone in this churchyard says he was born 20th July 1896, the son of John William. Hornshaw and Fowler say the father was the local Chairman of the Board of Guardians and that Herbert was educated at nearby Rishworth School, where he is also commemorated. They and other memorials in the local area give his service details: he was gassed and is commemorated on the Menin Gate which, like the mention of Hill 60, suggests he did not die in France as the gravestone says but in Belgium, near Ypres.
