He was the brother of Arnold, who is also commemorated here, and worked for a firm of clothiers before the war as well as playing football for Hebden Bridge AFC. He was killed by a mortar bomb alongside his friend Wilbert Hartley (who is commemorated on 29384): Sam is also commemorated on IWM 2712 and his full biographical, service and death details as they found them are shown there.
