Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. Originally from Darlington, his parents lived in Hebden Bridge and he played football for Heptonstall Red Star AFC whilst working in the breaking-up room of a mill. He enlisted in January 1916, was twice wounded and gassed: gassed again, he died in hospital a week after being admitted. He was not found by them to have been commemorated on any other Calderdale memorial.
