The memorial states he worked at Sowerby Bridge as an Engine Shed Labourer. Hornshaw and Fowler say he lived in Ripponden and was a Reservist who was therefore called up in August 1914: the press gave his date of death as 14th October not September as the memorial does. He is widely commemorated in Ripponden appearing on IWM 2626, 2627, 2634 and 2635.
