He was awarded the VC for his actions during the Battle of Loos, saving first the soldier of the 2nd Leicestershires (despite that soldiers objections and insistence that Thapa save himself), and then, going back out into No Man's Land, saving two wounded fellow Gurkhas. He was the first Gurkha to receive the VC.
