Memorial Details
What type of memorial is it?
How would you describe the memorial and its ornamentation?
Three light stained glass window with tracery above. The centre light depicts Christ as King of Heaven, with a crucifixion scene below, with angels each side of the cross. A Scroll between the two sections carries the title Captain of our Salvation. The left light depicts St George in full armour, while the right light depicts St Oswald, as King, holding a cross - their respective shields appear above them. In the centre of the tracery is depicted the Pelican in her Piety, representing self-sacrifice. The Dedication sits at the bottom of the centre light. This has been re-worked, as the window was Dedicated in 1919, and the Dedication mentions both World Wars.
The clear glass below the side lights replace lost images - St George slaying the dragon, on the left, and St Oswald praying with his troops beside the cross he erected before the Battle of Heavenfield.

The church closed for worship in 1988 and was declared redundant in 2003. Its main body was converted into apartments in 2007/8, with the chancel area being sealed off and retained for occasional worship. The movements of the war memorials in the building appear not to have been recorded.
